“Holding the Ache of Reality”

The Caregiver Chronicles, Chapter 5

I am so excited the book is here! And even more excited that I get to tell you about it (Life has been a lot busy lately)!

It’s easy to get lost in the wild ride of caregiving. Writing poetry has been my lifeline, guiding me back to myself when there’s just too much emotional dust in the air. The practice also helps me savor the sweet moments, because they are present too. The spareness of poetic language helps me drill down and find what I am feeling. Through poetry, I can lean into the expressive beauty of words to name my caregiving experiences, transforming them into art. My chapter offers a collection of poems with a narrative woven throughout to tie them together. The poems are captured moments of my caregiving life to both of my parents and to my Auntie while she cared for my late Uncle.

“Compelling, heartbreaking, and uplifting, these deeply personal tales by family caregivers are powerful and timely, given the rapidly aging global population. Part roadmap, part support group, this book is an invaluable companion for those who, at great cost, take on the noblest of sacrifices with courage, love, and humility.”

- Steve Lopez, Award-Winning Journalist, Los Angeles Times Golden State Columnist, and Author of the New York Times Bestselling The Soloist and Independence Day
