Not Gravel

Looking straight out to the water - Newport Beach, south of the pier.

Looking the length of the beach, parallel to the water.

Thousands of coquina clams, here at my feet.

It sure looked like gravel from further up the beach. But what if it wasn’t? Hm. Walking closer revealed something different, surprising, and amazing: thousands and thousands of tiny CLAMS! They were very much alive, waiting patiently for the tide to return, probably hoping not to become unfortunate snacks for the birds. I’d seen smaller ones before, maybe 1/4” in length or less. Standing at the water’s edge, I remember watching them burrow down into the sand and disappear as as each wave returned to the sea. But THIS?! I’d never seen this many, this big (1” length), and so densely packed! It was a marvel. Glad I took a second look, and so tickled to share this incredible sight with you too.

If I wrote a poem about this, it would simply be a big chunk of silent awe, with reverence and a jaw drop:

Maybe you’ve had moments like this too?

I wonder….what might be waiting for you to notice it?

Wishing you the surprising delight of discovery as we launch into this new year!
