Los Angeles Times Interview

I had a conversation that went something like this:

Los Angeles Times: We are looking for people using expressive arts to help the Monterey Park community find healing after the shootings. We'd like to film a video interview with you about the Monterey Park Tabiji Eggshells.

Me: (after fainting, getting up off the floor, and thinking WHAAAA?) Sure!

Here’s the video! Watch at Los Angeles Times or on YouTube. Or click the image below.

Some pics from interview day:

Me, with Jessica Chen, the gifted video producer who both told and held my story so beautifully.

I make a regular practice of doing new things - and doing old things new ways. It builds my flexibility, resilience and creativity to stretch into that kind of discomfort. Now, doing an interview with the LA Times was not at ALL on my radar as a possible new thing - but then it wouldn't be new if I had thought of it beforehand. I have never talked about my work in front of cameras, or been filmed while making art. I loved the conversations, both on and off camera, and I'm thankful to be able to offer my city opportunities for healing in the form of art workshops. Grief is complicated and there aren't always words to describe what we are feeling. It's from those deep places in us that color can speak beyond words.

Thank you to Evergreen Baptist Church Los Angeles for the use of their beautiful Nagano Chapel for filming.
